Operation theatre scheduling software, with the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist

By MyDoctor Team · Checked 25 October 2026

Short answer: Good OT software books each theatre without clashes for the room, the surgeon, the anaesthetist or the patient, records the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist (sign in, time out, sign out) with who ticked each item and when, and sends the theatre and team charges to the bill once.

What it should do

  1. A day schedule per theatre: major, minor, cath lab, endoscopy and labour room.
  2. Clash checks: no double booking of the theatre, the surgeon, the assistant, the anaesthetist or the patient.
  3. Linked to the admission: the procedure, the IP number and the bed come with the case.
  4. The WHO Surgical Safety Checklist: sign in before anaesthesia, time out before the first cut, sign out before the patient leaves theatre, each item with who ticked it and when.
  5. Steps in order: the patient cannot be wheeled in, and surgery cannot start or finish, before the matching checklist stage is complete.
  6. Charges to the bill once: the theatre charge and the surgeon and anaesthetist fees, never twice.
  7. Cancel or postpone with a reason, so the slot is free again.

How MyDoctor does it

MyDoctor Operation theatres does all seven, inside the same system as OPD, IPD, billing and TPA, pharmacy and lab. See MyDoctor for hospitals.

About the checklist

The WHO Surgical Safety Checklist (2009) has three parts: sign in, time out and sign out. WHO's implementation manual explains how a team adapts it to local practice. MyDoctor adds a fourth, ward stage before theatre (consent, fasting, site marking, pre-anaesthesia check).

Frequently asked questions

Does MyDoctor have operation theatre software?

Yes. Each theatre has a day schedule; the surgeon, assistant and anaesthetist are booked, clashes are refused, the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist is recorded, and the charges go to the admission bill.

Can we change the checklist?

The three WHO stages and a ward stage are built in. Tell MyDoctor what your hospital adds, and the MyDoctor team will adapt it.
